چکیده

Consider two adolescents: Person One and Person Two. Person One has never used substances and exhibits relatively few behavioral (conduct) problems. On the other hand, Person Two uses substances frequently and more commonly exhibits poor conduct. If you were to guess, which of the individuals would you expect to have lower overall judgment and self-regulation? If you answered Person Two, your intuition is correct. Scientific studies have confirmed our intuition; individuals with substance use and other behavioral problems have been found to have poorer judgment and selfregulatory skills. While the association with lower judgment and self-regulation is seemingly obvious and commonsensical, the true relationship between poor judgment and substance abuse is less clear. Namely, how do we know if drug use causes poor judgment or poor judgment and low self-regulation are risk factors for substance abuse? Behavioral genetic researchers at the Institute for Behavioral Genetics and other research institutes are designing research to decipher just this.

Effects of color on emotions.

Emotional reactions to color hue, saturation, and brightness (Munsell color system and color chips) were investigated using the Pleasure-Arousal-Dominance emotion model. Saturation (S) and brightness (B) evidenced strong and consistent effects on emotions. Regression equations for standardized variables were; Pleasure = .69B + .22S, Arousal = -.31B + .60S, Dominance = -.76B + .32S. Brightness e...

Opponent-process additivity--I: red-green equilibria.

A red/green equilibrium light is one which appears neither reddish nor greenish (i.e. either uniquely yellow, uniquely blue, or achromatic). A subset of spectral and nonspectral red/green equilibria was determined for several luminance levels, in order to test whether the set of all such equilibria is closed under linear color-mixture operations. The spectral loci ofequilibrium yellow and blue ...

The dyschromatopsia of optic neuritis is determined in part by the foveal/perifoveal distribution of visual field damage.

Most hypotheses of acquired dyschromatopsia invoke the mechanism of selective damage to specific components of the afferent visual system to explain the predominance of red-green and blue-yellow hue-discrimination defects found in neural and retinal disorders, respectively. However, this pattern of hue-discrimination disturbance in ocular disease may vary. There are frequent exceptions which ar...

Equilibrium hue judgements of dichromats.

It is generally held that protanopes and deuteranopes see only regions of blues and yellows in the visible spectrum, with an achromatic point, called the neutral point, separating these regions. Considerations of a zone model of color vision for the dichromatic observer led us to predict that a reduced form of red/green discrimination would allow equilibrium blue judgements to be made by protan...

Effect of stimulus duration on the perception of red-green and yellow-blue mixtures.

Thresholds for the perception of red and green or for blue and yellow, presented in two-color mixtures, were measured at exposure durations of 20, 50, 100, and 300 msec at the fovea and 6° above the fovea, at a constant luminance of 0.12 ft-L. Median foveal thresholds for red and green were constant from 300 to 50 msec and decreased slightly at 20 msec; at 6°, sensitivity to both red and green ...
